Saturday night (October 17th, yes, tonight!) sees the final celebrations for Tel Aviv’s centennial year. It’s gone quick, but that’s it for another hundred years…God and a certain Ahmadinejad permitting!
It’s been a great few months of events to celebrate Tel Aviv’s centennial, but this closing event might just pip them all. A floating, musical, fireworks a-blazing extravaganza is expected, and our advice is to get there early to avoid disappointment – it’s a freebie event on the Yarkon river, next to the Tel Aviv port (to be precise it’s at the old lighthouse featured in the Tel Aviv crest) and many thousands of Tel Avivians are expected to attend.
The fun starts at 8:30pm with a fancy water and lights show, followed by a clip of Tel Aviv residents accompanied by music performed by Israel’s very own Bruce Springsteen, Shlomo Artzi. Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai will then set fire to the lighthouse (don’t worry, it’s all part of the pyrotechnics display!), accompanied by this ballad from Kobi Aflallo.
If you’ve still got the energy after all those fireworks and soppy ballads, stay around for the open air party, which will probably keep chugging on into the wee hours as any self-respecting Tel Aviv party should…
Here’s to the next 100 years Tel Aviv!
