Kurt KobainDaniel Johnston first hit the big-time during the mid-80s in Texas, but record labels were soon fighting over him in the early 90s, when Kurt Kobain was regularly spotted wearing a t-shirt of Johnston’s album Hi, How are you.

He eventually signed for Atlantic Records, but commercial success didn’t follow. It was a documentary made about him in 2006 (that won the Sundance Film Festival) that really brought him back into the limelight, and ever since he has been touring, making music and painting; he is a cult comic book artist and his illustrations have been featured with most of his albums.

Johnston’s music is renowned for being direct, and often includes a disturbing blend of childlike naivete with darker, “spooky” themes.

Here’s one of his biggest hits, True Love Will Find You In The End, also used in an Axe advertisement last year.
