Jerusalem Woodstock Revival is back for its seventh consecutive summer, with musicians and Woodstock revelers of all ages returning to the Israeli capital for the hippyfest of love and classic music from the Woodstock era.
Continuing the Jerusalem Woodstock tradition, the capital’s beloved 60 & 70’s festival sponsored by the Jerusalem municipality, returns on July 30th to Jerusalem’s Kraft Stadium with Israeli artists covering music legends including Neil Young, The Who, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Eric Clapton, Sly & The Family Stone and many more.
Geva Alon, a Woodstock favorite and famed Israeli musician, who recently released his first album in Hebrew, will be returning to the JWR stage with his tribute to Neil Young.
American-born Libi is another favored returnee to the Jerusalem Woodstock stage. The hippest 60-something grandma, currently receiving national fame on the Israeli X-Factor, will be rocking out well-known hits of The Who, CCR and The Band with her renowned band, The Flashback.
Bringing a groovy new vibe to the Jerusalem Woodstock stage this year is Funk ‘N’ Stein, with their tribute to Sly & The Family Stone. Although all of the band members are Israeli born, there is an uncanny resemblance between lead vocalist Elran Dekel and his band’s gritty, funky vibe to the original Family Stone members who rocked the Woodstock stage in August of ’69 at Yasgur’s Farm.
Another newcomer to Jerusalem Woodstock is Gal Nisman and his popular young blues band, Full Trunk, who will be playing the hits ofEric Clapton and Cream.
Finally, back by popular demand, The Elevators will once again be tributing The Grateful Dead in this year’s festival. The band leader,Aryeh Naftaly promises an unforgettable Deadhead experience at Jerusalem’s Kraft Stadium on July 30th, celebrating the cult American band’s 50th year and their 5 “Fare Thee Well” concerts set to take place in the US in the next month.
“I missed the original festival of ‘69”, remarks Steve Leibowitz, President of the American Football in Israel (AFI) and director of the Kraft Family Stadium, where the 6-hour benefit concert is set to take place on July 30th… “however this is our 7th summer where we bring a little bit of Woodstock to Jerusalem and it has proven highly popular with Anglos and Sabras of all ages. Although it’s our “Shmita” year, we refuse to take a break and promise to provide a festival that’ll blow everyone’s bell bottoms off!”
Along with booths, juggling, face painting and other activities for the whole family, a traditional festival highlight is the “best dressed hippy” competition, sponsored by the Nachlaot-based “Trumpeldor” vintage store. Nadia Levene, another concert organizer adds: “This is my favorite event of the year. People contacted me months ago to make sure their summer holiday didn’t coincide with this festival. Returning to the Jerusalem Woodstock garden is to forget all the stresses of everyday life in Israel for just one day. We don’t promise the mud of Woodstock ’69, but along with Rock ‘n’ Roll and hippies of all ages, we hope to bring back the feeling of love and freedom as in our previous events.”
