Welcome to our continuing series of interviews with the locals – an attempt to debunk the myth that all Israelis are shepherd beating, gun wielding, war hungry zionists. These Israelis are regular people that you might well meet on your trip here; guys that work in banks, girls that live and play in Tel Aviv, mothers holding down regular jobs and paying off the mortgage, and so on. We’ve asked them a few questions, they’ve given us their honest answers…
This time it’s the turn of Roni. I’ve known Roni for a few years, largely through Matty, and she’s another worldly-wise Israeli with almost perfect Cockney-accented English. Yes, Cockney. I remember the first time I met her over a beer I was won over by that accent, plus the Alanis Morrisette tattoo on her leg. Some even reckon she looks like Alanis, me included. It’s the hair, those classic Israeli locks. She’s also a great Tiger Leaper, but if you want to know what I’m on about, ask her…Today she works for El-Al, Israel’s national airline (so yes, she gets to see the world now and again), is married to Zeev and proud mum to Lia, she of the beautiful big blue eyes. She’s also on Facebook.
So Roni, when you’ve been galavanting across the world on one of your many trips, how have people reacted when they hear you’re Israeli?
Well, as I always confessed to being Israeli in an almost apologetic tone… I never had any problems : ) But seriously, most of the people react in a positive way, usually asking questions about the current political issues.
How do you think Israel is seen by the world in general?
I believe that the criticism we see in the media on Israel’s foreign policy and state of affairs with the Palestinians – belongs mostly to politicians. I hope that the man on the street sees us as western democratic country (with flaws yet to be fixed).
What do you think visitors to Israel think of Israel?
I think they are pleasantly surprised to find an alive, modern and warm country, in contrast to what they see on their TVs back home. I know that they think the women are gorgeous! : )
What, in your opinion, is the best thing about Israel?
Bar Rafaeli : ) and, of course, the friendly people, the delicious food, the beautiful beaches and the Mediterranean weather.
What is “Israeli” in your eyes?
An impossible mixture of friendliness, boldness, curiosity, being straightforward and rude to one another, but on the other hand being helpful and coming together as one nation in times of need.
What is the must-see attraction you’d recommend to visitors?
Well, anyone coming to Israel must see the Old City of Jerusalem of course, as well as the old city of Jaffa, Zichron Yaakov, and of course the main attractions of Tel Aviv.
Which pub or restaurant would you recommend to visitors?
My favorite pub is Molly Blooms, an Irish Pub near Tel Aviv’s beach. That’s where I met you if you remember, it’s a great place to have a chat and a beer and hear some fine Irish tunes. And you still owe me a pint. As for a restaurant, I’d recommend the Coffee Bar, it’s the best bistro in Tel Aviv.
Where would you rather be, Israel or …?
I’m sorry, but definitely New Zealand. It’s heaven on earth.
