This September, US actor Clayton Fox returns to Israel to revive last year’s successful Israeli premiere of award-winning American play An Iliad.
An Iliad is a modern-day retelling of Homer’s classic poem, adapted by award-winning theater practitioners Lisa Peterson & Denis O’Hare. A lone storyteller, ‘The Poet’, is fated to travel the world telling the story of the Greek tragedies of Troy for the rest of eternity, aided only in his quest by the beautiful ‘Muse’.
This time, ‘The Poet’ finds himself in the heart of Israel, recalling the events of Troy to an audience who know all too well themselves the familiar story of conflict.
This production, directed by emerging Israeli director Yaniv Rozenblat, is English National Theatre of Israel’s remount of its sell-out 2014 Israeli première of the acclaimed American play. It features spellbinding actor Clayton Fox (“Sly as his name”; Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times) as ‘The Poet’ and a haunting soundtrack written and performed live onstage by the breathtaking Naomi Kern, who has appeared alongside the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.
Performed exclusively in Tel Aviv last year, this year’s remount is expected to tour to four stunning locations across the country – adding Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and the North to its original home in Jaffa, which will be revisited this year. Tickets are on sale from mid-August and reduced price tickets will be available for early booking, students/soldiers and groups.
According to Clayton Fox, the lead actor of the play, An Iliad is “a gorgeous, lyrical, contemporary re-telling of the Trojan War that combines music and ancient storytelling with an awareness of our current global circumstance.”
