The stark, desert scenery, with glorious sunrises and perfect floating-in-water escapades, is the stuff of a real holiday. But something that might escape you as you steady yourself in the salty waters is the fact that the Dead Sea also has a Jordanian half.

Oh yes, as you look out across the shimmering waters, you can’t help but notice the mountains across the lake. And did you ever stop to wonder what those on the Jordanian half were thinking or seeing, as they too paddled and floated in the Great Salty One? Let’s face it, they might just have the better option, with some glorious sunsets to feast their eyes on (it’s almost impossible to catch a sunset from the Israel side because the Dead Sea sits at the foot of some awesome mountains and the sun disappears behind them early…).

Hence the pictures below. Five views of the Dead Sea from the Jordan side. Which means plenty of sunsets, of course…

Or the next Jewish holiday. But Shavuot wouldn’t be Shavuot without some pictures from the shindig on my moshav. Traditionally, moshavs and kibbutzes are the place to be on Shavuot – tractors get to race against each other, horses trot across the landscape, grown men have an excuse to wear dresses and dance with sticks, and fathers get to relive their kite-flying days (or even high as a kite days)…so next year, if you’re here in Israel, I’d highly recommend a visit to a moshav/kibbutz.

Undoubtedly the most fun of all the Jewish holidays, it’s a great excuse to get dressed up (for both kids and adults) and to just let your hair down and party. And then there’s the gift parcels that are given, often between friends and colleagues and even neighbors, usually consisting of various cookies and chocolates – it’s all good!

I had a 4 year old Spiderman roaming the house much of the weekend, accompanied by a 3 year old tiger, while my wife went all feline. The party for the adults on the moshav where I live was canceled, but the kids had their fun day out in the end, in between the rain drops. Me, I just played the burglary victim but still got gloriously drunk…

So when I came across this site a few days ago I thought you should know about it. It’s a collection of Jerusalem pics, some really great ones, including a collection of shots taken from the sky high above the holy city, some of which are posted below, just to tease. Yes, Madonna was here in Israel, live and most definitely kicking!

It’s not quite as comprehensive a collection compared to the pictures I took at the Depeche Mode gig back in May, but I thought it might give some of you a taste of what you might have missed (you missed it??). I’ve also noticed there is a distinct lack of quality images from the show out there on the Web. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places, but wasn’t the audience busting at the seams with mobile phones and cameras?

Check out the images in the bottom row, if you ever wondered what a post-concert-with-very-thirsty-Israelis scene looks like.

As you can see, there is an absolutely amazing array of dairy-based food, all prepared by the in-laws, bless ‘em. Salads galore, pastas of all shapes and colours, home-made pizzas, yoghurts bursting with fruits and granola, it was all there. Some food didn’t even get snapped – well, you try and get a flan to pout, it’s hard work I can tell you…

It is one of the warmer places in the Holy Land of course, with a warm climate virtually all year round – in the winter it averages out at 20-23C. Read here for more about the Dead Sea.
