Picture of the Week XXXIX

This week it’s back to Tel Aviv beach we go, as the rains and snow sweep down on Israel this week. There’s nothing like a fiery sunset to get you wishing the summer would just hurry up…

The picture was taken by miodowski, who has quite a collection of sets to browse through.

Don’t know about you but I’m missing my flip-flops…

October in Israel – not too shabby!

If any of you are still wondering when is the best time to visit Israel, I’ll let the pictures below do the real persuading. My favorite month might be September, but October is pretty darned delicious too! And this weekend it’s expected to tip into the 40 C territory, at least down south…just be warned!

Yes, it’s still definitely t-shirt and shorts weather, still time to visit the beach and still time for plenty of ice-cream…and it looks like staying that way for quite a few days more.

Below are a couple of October sunsets on Tel Aviv beach…and yes, that’s my son in an Arsenal shirt, it’s a life sentence for some of us Brits…

Picture of the Week XXII

This week it’s the turn of Tel Aviv beach to once again make an appearance, though perhaps from a different perspective. With hardly a bikini clad Israeli and definitely not a sunset in sight, this shot sums up the reality of life in Tel Aviv. Though to be honest, the chances of you seeing an Israeli navy vessel this close to Tel Aviv beach are very slim. Just one of those perfectly timed shots (perhaps on Independence Day?)…

The shot was taken by Xnir, who specializes in aviation photography, as well as landscapes and people. Some amazing shots in his collection, especially of the aircraft in flight…

30 days hath September – even in Israel!

So, you might have realized by now that I’m a big fan of September in Israel. The last few evenings have been especially great, what with a cool breeze blowing and the sun setting that much earlier (Israel moved its clocks back an hour last weekend). There’s definitely a feeling of autumn approaching, and yes, even the air conditioning has been getting switched off!

And as September slips into October (hello October!), here are another three pics of Tel Aviv beach in September, taken just a couple of days ago…

Picture of the Week XIII

As the August heat continues to melt us here in Tel Aviv, I thought this shot summed up summer life in Tel Aviv nicely. You’ll often see scooters lined up on the promenade, as close to the beach as possible – I did it for years before moving into the slightly more convenient world of four wheels. And you’ll often see people on scooters with a dog sat between their feet. Not sure you could get away with this in other parts of the world, but hey, this is the Med, and it’s summer, and hey look, there’s the beach!

A slightly grainy picture adds to the post-sunset atmosphere and the journey home feel. Great shot, taken by Dan Bar Dov, who is of course, male. Check out his other stuff, he’s got a nice collection!

Picture of the Week XI

This week’s picture is again a beach scene. Sorry if any of you guys are struggling in climates less beach-friendly, but here in Israel it’s the only way to go in a sizzling hot July…I love this picture, especially the black and white tones and the light reflecting off the water, with the silhouette of the girl adding something just that little bit sexy arty.

The picture was taken by Mu Muper, whose Flickr stream is here and website portfolio here. He has some mighty decent shots in his collection, go browse!

Picture of the Week X

As we continue to bake and swelter through the summer here in the Holy Land, I thought a nice picture of Tel Aviv beach was in order, with the Mediterranean tantalizingly close…I doubt this shot was actually taken in the summer (check out the girl to the right in what looks like a jumper), but it still does a great job of tempting me in to one of those yellow chairs. Love the sky, sand and chairs, they blend so well together.

The picture was taken by Paula, who has some other nice pictures in her collection. That’s about all I can tell you about her because her profile is in Portuguese (I think). Right, I’m off to the beach!

Tel Aviv Beach – one of the world’s best beaches

Tel Aviv beach is surely one of the world’s wonders. Ever since arriving here some 19 years ago, it has always managed to somehow drag me down to its sandy shores, day or night, regardless of the weather. Of course, those long, hot sultry summer days that merge into sweaty, beer-at-the-edge-of-the-Mediterranean nights are what it’s all about - though truly wintry days in Israel are far and few between and you can often spend many a day at the beach during the winter months.

Now we’ve hit June, the summer really seems to have arrived: that familiar smell of sun tan lotion, the soft crashing of waves a few metres away, the megaphone voice of the lifeguard bellowing across the beach and the thwack of matkot aplenty (Israel’s unofficial national sport!) are signs that I’ve grown to love and look forward to…and I’m pretty sure most of Tel Aviv’s residents feel the same.

Tel Aviv beach is a big part of the way of life in the center of the country, and any number of activities revolve around it: myself, I’ve had dates on the beach, business meetings, fun paddling sessions with the kids, and wild, partying sessions that I probably shouldn’t detail (but I just might in my Why I ended up in Israelseries)…but it just gives you some examples of how the beach in Tel Aviv is such a central player in all things Tel Aviv. You’re coming to Tel Aviv? Expect to see some of Tel Aviv beach!

And I’m not alone in my passion for Tel Aviv’s finest sandy stretch: it has just made it into the ucityguides list of Top 7 Beaches in the World.
