Picture of the Week LIX

This week we’re off to the beach in Tel Aviv, but with a little bit of a religious twist. Nothing like a bit of religion in the Holy Land, eh? Yep, even the religious get to dip their toes in the Med – or do they? To tell you the truth, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them dip their toes anywhere, probably down to a modesty prohibiting thingeemajib.

Anyway, the pic was taken by Paulina Sza, a lady from Warsaw/Tel Aviv who has some mighty fine people shots in her stream. Go see.

Picture of the Week LVIII

Another slice of life in the Holy Land, this time in the form of some Middle Eastern delicacies – olives – at the market. Delicacies that I personally can’t stand, but they are everywhere in this part of the world (for example you might see them in a pub, served as munchies alongside your beer), so sometimes you’ve just got to chew and smile…

The picture was taken by tamarmosh, a Tel Aviv female bartender (so can understand where she got the inspiration for this shot!). She’s got some powerful people shots in her collection!

The Editors live in Tel Aviv

As some of the bigger names lined up to come and visit Israel fall along the wayside, it’s nice to see some of those great indie bands bucking the trend. Last week saw Placebo get the plaudits, this weekend it was the Editors, who apparently put on a stonkingly good show at Tel Aviv’s Barby Club.

The band further wove themselves into Israel’s heart with some very supportive comments coming on the back of the Pixies canceling. As Tom Smith their frontman put it:

Tonight we played one of the most memorable shows of our career, 1004 people singing their hearts out, 1004 people who hope for peace and resolve wherever the troubles may be, be it on the door step or the other side of the world. Thank you for tonight Tel Aviv, we hope to see you again soon.

This week it’s time for a return to Tel Aviv beach. In fact, the funkiest beach in Israel. And one of those awesome sunset shots that just get you going “mmmmmmm….”.

The picture was taken by the mysterious Shachar Laudon – who is genderless and homeless according to Flickr. Me, I think Schahar is female…

Placebo live in Tel Aviv and bucking the trend…

British alternative rockers Placebo bucked the trend this weekend by actually turning up for their show in Tel Aviv. A lot of politics are at play these days, what with the Gaza flotilla story still raging across networks across the world..we ain’t going to go down that slippery road, but we do think Placebo deserve a pat on the back for coming and putting on what many people said was a great show.

As Placebo themselves put it: “Put your hands in the air, wave them like you give a fuck!” – jump to 2.55 to see a rousing finale with Israeli flags a flying and the crowd in glorious wave sync mode!

Sunflowers and Cherries

This week it’s all about sunflowers and cherries, the last two remnants of slightly cooler days -  before the long hot summer comes and smacks us in the face! Both the fields of sunflowers in fields around where I live (and elsewhere throughout Israel) and the containers of cherries in the local shops don’t last long, but while they last they’re very very sweet…and just a reminder of the amazing variety of fruits and flora in the Holy Land!

Picture of the Week LVI

This week’s picture comes from down south, in the hot, steamy desert region of Israel (in the mountains around Eilat to be precise). It’s pretty darned hot there these days, as summer kicks in, so if you’re heading in that direction, cover yourself up and drink lots of water. But this picture was taken at sunrise and has a great, cooling effect…

Highly recommended to click this to make it big – really, go click! It was taken by Avi Morag, who has some gorgeous shots in his stream, and who was featured here, almost a year ago.
