Picture of the Week LI

Nothing like a bit of downtown Tel Aviv on a Friday morning…and here’s a glimpse of southern Tel Aviv that gives you a real slice of everyday life in The City That Never Sleeps. Love that city vibe, those balconies, the clothes hanging on the rails…

The pic was taken by Mel Bergman, a student from Jerusalem, who has some fine pics of his hometown that are well worth a look.

Israel strikes it big! Cliff Richard and Diana Ross coming to Tel Aviv!

Oh yes! Who needs Elton John and Metallica and even Rihanna – when you’ve got Sir Cliff Richard and Diana Ross on their way to the Holy Land!

There might be a mighty fine list of performers coming to the Holy Land this year, but I now I feel complete…at least if the news on Israel’s Channel 10 is correct. They declared this morning that Sir Cliff and Diana Ross are heading for Tel Aviv this summer, although no dates or venues have yet been scheduled.

I couldn’t find anything about the story online, so we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and our excitement on hold for just a wee bit longer. Maybe this is just another Rolling Stones teaser?

Frankly, I’m not sure how I’m going to get any sleep until the shows are confirmed…

And Cliff mate, Carrie doesn’t live round these parts, but you can find plenty of Devil women!

Crikey, did I just post TWO Cliff Richard videos…?

Meet Julie, the igoogledisrael.com bitch

With us now for approximately a month, Julie is the in-house alarm system that will hopefully prevent another break-in…and she’s pretty cute too!

Picture of the Week L

The half-ton is up! 50 posts, 50 cracking pictures! And this week’s is no exception. I’ve been looking to snap this picture myself, as over the next few days the fields of onions near my house are about to bloom (I’m guessing this pic is from last year’s crop). Not a typical Israel scene, but another example of how “typical” Israel isn’t

The pic was taken by Fishy’s, a tour guide from the southern Israeli town of Arad. Check out his gallery of Israeli desert pics!

Independence Day Chorus Line

Yesterday was, of course, Independence Day in Israel, the day of the grill and of eating as many kebabs as is humanly possible. It’s a nice little holiday with lots of food and socialising and no, I’m not offended by the fact that Israel is celebrating emancipation from its British Mandate slavemaster. He, he.

Here on the moshav, they make it all communal and everyone takes part. Me, I had to prepare a table or two, but it was the wife who gave it her most…check out the clip of her below as she struts her stuff to an Arik Einstein (an Israeli icon from the 60s and 70s) number. You can guess which one’s her, right?

Remembering: Yom HaZikaron (Remembrance Day) in Israel

Another “only in Israel” moment, as the country slows to a crawl and remembers its fallen soldiers and then heads into party mode tonight, to celebrate Independence Day (this year Israel celebrates 62 years of freedom!). But that’s quite a contrast in emotions and attitudes, all wrapped up in the space of 24 hours.

Me, I don’t know anyone who’s had the misfortune to have lost a relative or someone close, though one of the wife’s classmates was killed during his military service and we used to visit his grave on Yom HaZikaron. Today we’ll probably catch some of the very moving documentaries broadcast on TV, before heading into a party atmosphere for the shindig on our moshav later tonight. More of that to come in the shape of pics and videos…

DJ Jazzy Jeff live in Tel Aviv!

The legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff stopped by on Thursday for a show in Tel Aviv’s biggest nightclub, HaOman 17. Jazzy Jeff, or Jazz as he’s otherwise known, has been plying his DJ trade since the early 80s, and was even crowned world DJ Champion back in ’86. He is also known as Will Smith’s long term partner in crime, as part of the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Although they don’t work together as such, they are still best buddies…awwww.

Great to see another big name landing in Tel Aviv. Don’t forget to see our guide to who is coming to perform in Israel this year.

Picture of the Week XLIX

As the spring quickly moves into summer, and temperatures start to soar, here’s a quick reminder of winter days past: a double rainbow (you can just about make out the second rainbow) over the fields of the Upper Galilee in northern Israel. Just love the winter skies in Israel, from the beautiful sunsets to the rainbows, to the rain-laden clouds coming over the Mediterranean…guess I’ll have to miss them for another few months!

The picture was taken by drormiler, a guy who lives in Kiryat Shmona up in the far north, who was also featured seven weeks back. Great pix!
