Autumn Nights in the Old City of Jerusalem

One of the absolute must-sees on any visit to Israel is the Old City of Jerusalem. Teeming with history, character and even a fair dollop of holiness, you can now also take an autumnal walking tour – at night – through some of its best parts (through September and October only).

With what looks like an annual event now, following last year’s success, your visit to the Old City just got even more interesting. Through September and October, on Monday and Thursday evenings, you can now experience the Old City of Jerusalem’s amazing holy sites accompanied by live musical shows (including performances by the Perach Adom Group, the Maghreb Band and South America’s Trio Indio) and also book yourself on a guided tour through the Old City’s Jewish and Christian Quarters. In addition, you can also catch the “Night Spectacular” multimedia show at the Tower of David Museum.

And the best part of these autumnal nights extravaganzas – it’s all FREE!

The hustle and bustle of the Old City and its street markets will also likely continue way into the night, as most restaurants and cafés of the Old City will remain open till the small hours.

Hats off to the people behind this idea, which was an initiative of the Jerusalem Development Authority in cooperation with the Jerusalem Municipality, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ariel Company. Its aim of encouraging visitors to check out the Old City during the evening hours and not only during the day is a great idea. The Old City at night is a great experience, the whole place takes on a different character. You really should check it out and get yourself on one of these guided tours (where, for example, you can hear about a British lord who disappeared in the Old City, and with him the family fortune…).

For advance registration for guided tours while in Israel, check with your hotel or the nearest tour operator. Alternatively, just turn up and grab yourself an Old City experience!
