The annual Sacred Music Festival in Jerusalem: an international celebration of music

jerusalem sacred music festivalThe now annual Jerusalem Sacred Music Festival (also known as Mekudeshet) brings a magical, cultural blast to the Holy City during September!

First started in 2012, the Sacred Music Festival brings a variety of musical talent to Jerusalem, and is part of the wider Jerusalem Season of Culture, that runs throughout the summer.

The 2016 Sacred Music Festival runs from September 4-23 (oh yeh, it has been expanded upon!) and will bring together a wide range of musicians and artists from Israel and abroad for a month of poignant experiences that could happen only in Jerusalem. At the heart of the Festival’s artistic philosophy is the belief that meaning is what differentiates holy music and sacred music. It is this meaning that structures the music, emanates from the artist’s soul and weaves its way into the soul of the listener. We’re not surprised that this festival is fast becoming a must-attend!

Here’s a slice of what to expect…

The 2016 program includes 24 doco-theatrical tours in the footsteps of individuals who dissolve Jerusalem’s boundaries; Baaba Maal (Senegal), Misty in Roots (England), and Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia) in Mekudeshet Music week; urban nature on wheels in the heart of Jerusalem’s city center; famed ultra-orthodox singer performing classic Arabic music; a mind-expanding night of lectures, seminars and art at Recalibrating—experiments in alternative realities; Jewish maftirim sung in ancient Hebrew from the heart of Islamic Turkey; a collective reading of the great archive of Jerusalem confessions; the largest singing circle in the Middle East will host some surprising guests; rustling sounds and voices from under the ground on the seamline between city and forest; A Matter of Life and Death—the Israel Story podcast presents a radiophonic-theatrical journey  that begins from the end.
