Barcelona, the world’s greatest football team and home to quite possibly the world’s greatest ever player, Lionel Messi, will be playing in Israel this coming summer!
In their own unique way of bringing about world peace, the boys from Barcelona will play against a team of Israelis and Palestinians in July (the date is believed to be July 31, which is to be confirmed shortly, as will the venue).
The Barcelona President Sandro Rosell is currently visiting Israel and meeting with both President Shimon Peres and President Mahmud Abbas, where details will be further thrashed out (such as who gets a signed Messi shirt first…).
This is BIG news for a football hungry region lacking in any real footballing success over the last few years. Israel last qualified for the World Cup in 1970, although a number of local champions have managed to qualify for the group stages of the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
Rosell is here to further cement Barcelona’s standing as a force in social and cooperation projects throughout the world, and knows that peace can only be possible by a strengthening of the trust between the two communities. Barcelona have done their bit previously, including the 2005 match against the Peace Team (also made up of Israelis and Palestinians), which ended 2-2.
With Barcelona unquestionably the most popular team in the world in this part of the Middle East, who knows, maybe this is the way forward to Peace in the Middle East!
