Shraga – a Jerusalem cafe (and sandwich) legend is reborn!

Shraga Cafe JerusalemFor those of you visiting or living in the Talpiot area of Jerusalem in the 1990s, the name Shraga might bring back some pretty powerful memories of some mighty fine sandwiches. After a long hiatus, now they’re back, in a more central location and ready to rock the conventional sandwich world to its core!

In what was pretty much a hole-in-the-wall family run operation, the original Shraga quickly turned into a legend thanks to its unique color-coded sandwiches. You didn’t order a tuna or cheese sandwich, you’d order a yellow or red sandwich! Jerusalemites loved the concept and Shraga became a thriving little cafe. The fun lasted seven years until the Jerusalem council ordered its closure, despite protests from loyal customers.

The new Shraga looks to build on that legend but with a little more style. Reopened this autumn (2012), Shraga is now also located more centrally, just opposite the Mamilla Hotel (at the end of the Mamilla pedestrian mall).

Shraga Cafe JerusalemThe new place includes a great bar to sit at, plus a few chairs and stools outside (with a cute mini-bar at the huge open front window). More style perhaps than the old cafe on Derekh Bet Lehem, but that old-school neighborhood cafe feel is still well and truly intact, and a definite plus in our books. But the main attraction is, once again, the sandwich! If you love a great sandwich (although it’s just so much more than any sandwich you’ve previously known!), you’ll love Shraga!

We were there last week and loved it! The hand-made sandwiches look awesome (yes, we tried the legendary red one and weren’t disappointed – it was also huge!) and the staff, including Nir, the guy behind the original Shraga, and Tal, were very friendly and welcoming. Just as it should be in a neighborhood cafe. The free shots of Arak (an anise based drink, typically 50%+ alcohol) also added a nice buzz to the evening (we were there in the evening, which apparently has a totally different vibe from the day)!

Highly, highly recommended! And tell them Ashley from igoogledisrael.com sent you!

The pics are from the Shraga Facebook page, I’d be more than happy to give credit to the photographer – which looks like it’s you, correct?
