Glen, I think most cafes in Israel aren't there for the food. Maybe for the croissants, the pastries, the little sweet things, but I don't think I'd go if I was feeling hungry. By the way, one of the best breakfasts in Tel Aviv is at Benedict's: http://igoogledisrael.com/2009/01/benedict-breakfasts/

I'm sorry to have to disagree about "good" cafe food. They're all offering pretty much the same thing, and the breakfasts I've had have been deeply disappointing. Food always lukewarm (often closer to cold), boring dips and dry unimaginative salads. Far from good value for money, the only tasty thing being the coffee, but all too often barely on the border of lukewarm. The safest thing are the sandwiches, but after trying many, only Aroma makes the grade there.

In my opinion this list represents "boring" coffee places in Tel Aviv.

The cool places in my 29 year old opinion are:
1. Dalllal - It's a restaurant at day, but in the morning you can grab an excellent breakfast. Amazing design. Sits in Neve Tzedek - small streets filled art galleries and decorated buildings.

2. Landver at Rabin Square - Cool and hip coffee shop. Great sandwiches, excellent coffee, historic location (Rabin Square). Basking in the sun (Summer)

3. Benedict - A coffee shop serving breakfasts all day long. Cool idea, good execution. Very popular place. Location: Ben Yehuda and Jabutinsky corner.

4. Streets Cafe - Very hip and popular coffee shop in King George and Nevi'yim street. I like their design and location. The upper floor is designed as a home - you can even use their computers.

5. Dizzy - a combination of DVD store/rent, laundermats and coffee shop. The idea: do you laundry, rent a laptop and watch a movie while you wait. You can just sip coffee and eat there without the laundry part. Quite cool.

6. Eidelson 10 - excellent pastries.

There are more, but this are my top 6.

Great post! Loved reading it.
May I suggest two of my favorites - Sonia Getzel Shappira (http://bit.ly/sonya) on Simta Almonit, and Nehama Vachetzi (http://bit.ly/nehama) near Habima.
